Desktop Publishing Using Pagemaker 6.0 Windows w/6.5 Supplement
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (July, 1999)
Authors: Julia Case Bradley, Sandra Rittman, Joanne Floyd, and Nancy Sherman
Average review score:

Comprehensive, easy to read, good excercises
A great teaching or learning manual for PageMaker! I used this text teaching DTP and PM at a community college. It is well illustrated and has step-by-step instructions. Each lesson has labs that, if completed, will make you proficient in PM. The only drawback to the book is the changes to PM6.5. While the supplement covers the changes, some of the excercises cannot be completed as directed because they do not account for the changes. (for instance, the grid manager in PM6.5 is set up differently). PM6.5 Plus (newest release) has some additional features (such as a tool bar) that may require an additional supplement but can be figured out easily enough until it's available. Overall, a good, comprehensive book for beginners or intermediates.

Evening Light

Examines the passion to survive and thrive
The Evening Light is a collection of full-length poems examining the passion to survive and thrive in a world of forces seeking to silence our hopes, dreams, aspirations, and even our lives. Floyd Skloot masterfully employs poetry to show that through true insight it is entirely possible to make our way through even the deepest darkness and out into the light. Bittersweet Nightshade: It has been months since I could walk this far./At noon the fence row thick with bittersweet/nightshade flashes with summer sun. there are/no clouds, no fleeing deers, no swirls of breeze,/nothing I remember from the last time/I was here. Now I prop my cane against/a post, lying back where the long stems climb/and scramble over everything that rests//in their way. I love to see these blue stars./Their five points bend back to reveal a blunt/golden cone nestled in the heart of the leaf/where in this light long shadows run like tears./The wide yellow berries starting to run/toward red are the exact color of grief.

Facing Our Future: Hurricane Floyd and Recovery in the Coastal Plain
Published in Paperback by Coastal Carolina Press (August, 2001)
Authors: John R. Maiolo, Harold Stone, and Monica McGee
Average review score:

Be Better Prepared for Hurricanes and Related Flooding
When my colleagues and I planned the conference upon which this book was based, we wanted to make sure we would come to understand why Hurricane Floyd wreaked such devastation upon Eastern North Carolina in September of 1999 so we could better inform the public as to the causes and remedies. What we found was that many of the disastrous consequences could have been avoided. A series of freakish natural events, combined with thousands of political and individual property development decisions over a 50 year period, converted Eastern NC into a giant bathtub with many of its key drains clogged. Some have described the flooding that occured as "Biblical" in nature. And it can happen again unless community leaders show the courage to make the necessary modest and reasonable changes to their respective communities. This is a book from which scientists, politicians, agency personnel and the general public all can benefit. It is based on research in the physical, environmental, and social sciences as well as "on the ground" experiences. All net proceeds go to projects for improving our understanding of the impacts of hurricanes.

Fallen Hero

Fallen Hero
Fallen Hero is one of the best suspense novels I have ever read. This book is so real life it that it keeps you very interested. This is one of those type of books that I could not put down. The author has definately hit the nail on the head with his portrayal of Todd Wilson. There is no smoked glass or covering up the typical "Public Image" most heros have. Todd Wilson has been clearly portrayed to be someone that goes through the trials and tribualations that many real life people face every day. This book makes you think about life and how someone should live it to the fullest because you never know what is around the next corner. It is great to see an author that can reflect the real world so clearly. I will recommend this to everyone I know. Wouldn't it be great to make a movie out of this book!

Firefighters the World over
Published in School & Library Binding by Hastings House Pub (June, 1967)
Author: Floyd James Torbert
Average review score:

Excellant introduction to firefighters of foreign lands.
Although published over twenty plus years ago, this book allows a quick look at the fire service around the world. Of special interest are the excellant drawings of each nation's firefighters dressed in their period turnout gear and uniforms. And in many images there is a partial showing of a fire engine unique to that country's fire service. This book forms the basis that the fire service must become more global both in sharing everyone's ideas, apparatus used, and training and education methods. Fire remains as mankind's greatest enemy. More powerful than any war force, it robs us every minute of the day by taking lives and property. A universal sharing of knowledge in the prevention of fire and firefighting techniques throughout the world is the underlying theme of the book. Although written in a simple format for the youthful reader, the book is still enjoyable and educational. Michael L. Kuk, PhD. Savanna Army Depot Fire and Emergency Services.

Fish on: A Guide to Playing and Landing Big Fish on a Fly
Published in Hardcover by The Derrydale Press (August, 2003)
Author: Floyd Franke
Average review score:

Floyd Franke's Fish On ! is Fantastic !
I have not yet finished reading this great book but I feel qualified to give it 5 stars. The reason is that I had the privilege of attending the Joan & Lee Wulff Fly Fishing School in early May. It was there that I met Floyd and experienced his considerable talents as a teacher. The last session of the school was on playing and landing fish. It was incredible. Many of the old fishing myths were debunked and ever since I have wished that I had taken notes of everything Floyd said. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon a copy of this book yesterday in a local bookstore. Finally, all that unique information, and more, in a concise volume and I needn't feel guilty about my lack of note taking. I just wish that Floyd had told us that he had a book coming out on the subject.

There are hundreds of books on how to hook a fish, and I must admit to owning more than my share, but until Floyd wrote this book nobody told you exactly what to do after you set the hook. This book belongs in your library.

I would write more but I really want to get back to reading Fish On! !

As an aside, if the opportunity arises to attend Joan & Lee Wulff's Fly Fishing School it is an incredible experience and should not be missed. For nearly the last two months I have not stopped thinking of that memorable weekend.

Flick the Hero!
Published in Hardcover by Worrywart Pub Co (June, 1997)
Authors: Lynn Floyd Wright and Tony Waters
Average review score:

One of the best books for children of all ages.
Being a Children's Librarian, I can recommend this book for children of all ages. When Jack and Flick visit Jack's cousin, they find many adventures waiting for them. Flick is a "wonder-dog" in every sense--he has overcome so many odds but yet is still so spirited and playful. The boy-dog relationship is a time tested one, and this story proves that with faith and love that we call can make this world a better place. Ms. Wright has given all of us "children" a book that can be read aloud or by oneself, but will continue to be read over and over again. It's great to have a book that I can recommend to children and parents and not worry whether they will enjoy it or not. All of Ms. Wright's books that I recommend to parents and children have been well received. The children beg for more, and the parents are thankful for their children reading. The characters are believable--Jack is a typical boy and Flick would be a wonderful dog for anyone to have. This is truly a book that children will love--it has horses, dogs, children and lots of excitement. This book is one that will be read over again and again
